So there are the writings I did during the elections (and shortly thereafter). What I would like to express now, is how PROUD I am of all the people who are standing up and expressing their distrust in their government, and voicing their opinions on healthcare and other issues. It warms my heart to see so many who have sat on the couch for years, yelling at the TV, get out there to town hall meetings and let their representatives know how they feel. This intrusion into our lives has reached a breaking point for so many people! And it amazes me the way some of the congressman/women have responded to them, refusing to answer their questions because they asked them loudly and angrily. This should be a wake-up call to these congressmen, that people are fed-up! Instead they are derogatory to them and brush off their questions without a valid answer. They try to discredit them. They refer to them as 'the mob'. They try to say they are 'organized' and coming on buses and are paid for; but many of these people are older Americans and are just fed-up.
I did see one congressman at a town hall meeting on C-SPAN, from a southern state (a blue-dog democrat), who handled himself and an angry crowd very well; in fact, the other members of congress should take a lesson from him in diplomacy! While answering a constituent's question, if someone shouted out a question, he would turn to them and say, "Let me finish answering this question, I'll get to you". He didn't look down his nose at them; he didn't look intimidated and overwhelmed; he took it all in stride, and actually showed compassion and it seemed that he really did care what these people had to say. I was shocked! After all the "angry mob" media reports, you would think every person at these town hall meetings were crazy lunatics, hell-bent on 'disrupting' discussion. But as I saw here, people are just MAD and they have a hard time controlling themselves if they don't feel heard. This congressman did not feed them a bunch of bull like other congressmen have, and soon the crowd seemed to calm down and people asked their questions. It was a very productive discussion.
It makes me proud to see people stand up for their right to be heard.

Writing #2, Feb. 28, 2009
The changing of our country from a free, proud, patriotic country of self-sufficient people, who dream of reaching their personal full potential and strive every day for prosperity, to a country of fearful, dependent people who look to the government to care for them and keep them from failure or proverty. Who were so willing to suddenly give up many of their freedoms, and their dreams, for the security of a nanny state. Not realizing that once personal initiative and independence is relinquished, it is only through revolution that it is to be recovered.
"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both. " - Benjamin Franklin
As a child of the 70's and a teen of the 80's, I was brought up to view my country in a very patriotic light. To love my country, deep in my heart, as I loved my family. I was not preached to, nordo I recall conversations about the subject directly. But it was all the 'little' things; the Pledge of Allegience each morning at school; singing the National Anthem before a baseball game; learning about the uniqueness of our form of government and how democracy and freedom and individual rights empower every person it touches; reading about the courageous men who died to preserve a better future for their children, and rid themselves of tyranny. Those people decided to turn their lives upside down to fight against an oppressive government, and to create an entirely new form of government and a strong nation. They had the courage to sacrifice their 'secure' (albiet, increasingly intrusive) existance sustained by the King, in order to stand on their own, no matter how hard it would be.
I became consumed by the 2008 election campaigning, and listened to all the media, both on the right and the left. Then recently I realized, this shouldn't be political- this is all based on human nature, and history. People will tend to do certain things given specific circumstances, in almost every matter. We fight for revolution, then take our way of life for granted, become complacent, and it slowly slips away. We would rise in revolt if everything suddenly changed, but a dictatorship is not possible in America, so indoctrination of the masses is being used instead. The media uses propaganda to sway people towards one opinion or the other, and most people are too apathetic to check the facts for themselves, so they go along with the popular perspective. They believe everything they are told. Especially when they are fearful, and emotion is used to sway them. Even when a leader does what he says he will not do, nobody says a word. You can almost hear people's collective thoughts, "We are fearful; take care of us". That is the turning point. You have relinquished your personal freedoms for security.
[I have heard people ask, what specific freedoms are you losing? Because they don't understand that we aren't talking about freedom of speech, or freedom of press or others. What we mean is that by creating a larger government, we are giving that government the power to change many things in our lives in the future, and to put in place many laws that will limit our ability to be 'free'. It's a perspective that is lost on too many people.
Some call it 'ideology'. I call it vigilance. It is our responsibility to watch the government to be sure that they continue to do as we wish, as a representative democracy. We all know it's not perfect, and we don't expect a utopia.
I expect my government, at all levels, to do certain things. I expect them to protect, through local police and fire departments, and protect our nation as a whole with our military. I expect them to provide a basic education system, though the public school systems. And I expect them to keep a basic infrastructure in this country, with roads and such. And I expect them to create laws and regulations to keep us all safe. For all of these things, I am happy to pay my taxes. But the problem is, they do all of these things without efficiency. Our tax dollars are wasted. The regulations we have are either too little, too much, or are not enforced (i.e. the SEC). I've heard people try to defend the government, saying we don't want any government. They must not have been listening. We want limited government, that understands that they are to do what we want them to do, not think that they know better and will do what they want. That is preposterous. ]
This is deeply saddening to me, watching 52% of this country vote for a person who tells them everything they want to hear, tells lies and half-truths, misleading them and saying everything he can to get elected. Not just Obama. I saw McCain live at a rally and was stunned to hear him say, right in front of me, "We will keep people in their homes", refering to the housing/foreclosure crisis. This was one week before election day. I always thought the Republicans stood for personal accountability and smaller government? How can he promise to help those who made a mistake (by believing predatory lendors and/or buying too much house), at the expense of responsible tax payers? Because he was saying whatever he had to, to get elected. He knew people were scared, and looking to their next leader to make things better.
So all of this has made me realize that life is full circle. They were repressed so came to a new land, were repressed again so they fought for their freedom. (not everyone wanted independence, showing that even then, not everyone had the courage to break away from a bad situation in order to better their lives. ). Then after several hundred years of freedom, some have forgotten how fragile our liberties are, and take them for granted. This apathy has led to the majority of this country voting for bigger government and starting on a road right back to relying on government for their basic needs. This is not America, not the proud and independent America I love.

Need to mention....
I realized I should probably mention what 'walk of life' I come from before someone reads my statements and deducts that I am cold-hearted and cannot relate to those who are having a hard time financially.
I have been a single mom, stay at home mom, work at home mom, and working mom (12 hours a day away from my 1-year old!); lived below the poverty line, as well as above it; lived in the city and in the country; lived on the coast and in the South; worked for the boss and have been the boss; and have helped loved ones and been helped by loved ones.
I know what its like to have searched for change in the couch and car, to buy milk for my baby while being a single mom, working 2 jobs and only seeing my baby while he's sleeping when I get home late at night.
I also know what it feels like to take risk and forego security, in order to build a better future for our family, by starting our own business. We haven't made it big yet, but we thrill at the prospect and it keeps us going every day.

If you didn't read my original post, please do so to understand what I'm talking about here. This was written last year with much anger due to what I was seeing on TV about the economy and the presidential campaign .....
-----------------
I am amazed at the level of ignorance in our country. I am amazed at the distance we have come in creating this great country, only to see people begging the government to take care of them and “make their lives better”. Is it an antiquated idea that we should each take care of ourselves? Depending on the government, or depending on anybody to make our lives better, only diminishes our self-worth, and leaves us feeling helpless. It strips us of our power to enrich our lives; it removes our ability to fight hard to accomplish our dreams; and it starves us of the ambition that most Americans use as their driving force to succeed. Since when is personal accomplishment a bad thing, and why is it that we wish to reward complacency while punishing high achievers? Without the great minds of our country, driven by ambition to succeed in medicine, science and technology, we will lose our ability to not only compete in the world market, but we will also lose our very independence, so that we rely even more so on the government that we begged to “take care of us”.
I’ll take care of myself just fine, thank you.
To empower the human spirit, is to see an eagle soar, knowing that there are no limits to his world. I will instill this spirit in my children. They will know that to depend on ANYBODY (as an adult)is to rob themselves of their very spirit. They must fly free, having the confidence of knowing that they can depend on themselves to get through anything they may encounter in their lives . And each time they stumble and pick THEMSELVES up, they will grow stronger. If there was a hand there to help them up, they will have lost an opportunity to grow as an individual. They will always know in the back of their minds that if anything happens in the future, they can depend on someone helping them. The problem is, there may not be someone there to help them, and they will be too weak to help themselves. Then they have an even greater need for help.
This is NOT what this country was founded on; helplessness. Nobody seems to remember our country’s proud history. Does anyone remember WHY we declared our independence? We had grown dependant on the ‘mother country’ and like helpless children, grew angry when they imposed new taxes and other restriction on us. So many people DIED so that we could stand on our own feet, in order to prosper and offer a better life for our children. So why are so many of us now begging the government to make things “better” for us? Why do we want to give our power and freedoms away like that? Why do we think the government can do more for us than we can do for ourselves? Have you seen how the government handles social security, Medicare, the Postal Service?
It amazes me that people think that things are so bad right now. I don’t see people in soup lines. I don’t see hoards of homeless. I don’t see sick people turned down for healthcare. No, the poorest of the poor are taken care of, with public housing, food stamps and medicare. Everyone else needs to get off their ASS and take some responsibility for themselves! It is inconceivable to me that some people think that rich people are somehow evil and should be punished with severe taxation, in order to reward those who refuse to be accountable for their own lives. In the greatest nation in the world, with the most opportunities in the world! Any minority can get a FREE college education! What the hell are they complaining about?
Does anyone realize that the ‘rich’ people are the ones who own the companies that provide the JOBS that everyone depends on? So, gee, if they are over-taxed, they will either CUT jobs, or raise prices and lose market share to overseas competition. Then those who raised their taxes and caused the job losses, will blame the rich man for moving his company overseas to survive! Duh!
Capitalism is a beautiful thing. It takes confident, and fiercely independent people to survive. That is life. Survival of the fittest. If my business fails, it is because *I* failed my business. I don’t care if some outside forces effected it. *I* did not see it coming and adjust my business accordingly. *I* did not react appropriately, or in time. *I* did not have a plan B, or C or D. If it fails, I will take what I learned from my failure, and build an even better business. See? I grew stronger. I grew as a human being.
I could have blamed the high taxes that were imposed on my business. I could have said that no one wanted to buy my product because my competition lied to them. I could have blamed everyone and anyone, and said that ‘the little man can’t get ahead’. Then my spirit would be weakened. I would probably expect someone to help me. Yes, somebody should help me. It isn’t fair. It just isn’t fair! Look at all those rich people. They make too much money. They should help us poor folks, down on our luck! My business failed so I’m a failure so I sit on my couch all day and tell everyone who will listen that those rich people’s tax dollars should pay my rent. And buy my food, and even pay for my doctor visits.
Let’s take this full circle. I am amazed at the level of ignorance in this country. That good people like you and I are spoon-fed by the Evening News each night, and are convinced that this country is so bad, and we brought on the terrorism ourselves, and our economy is so, so bad. Poor us. Poor little helpless us. But John Q. Public has noticed that gas costs more, so he feels squeezed and decided to pack his lunch for work each day instead of eating out every day. That has been tough. And making those payments on that shiny new SUV in the driveway is getting harder, too. But maybe that’s because of the payments on that new boat in the backyard. Hmmm. No, it can’t be that. It’s because the economy is bad, that’s what the news tells me every night. I can barely afford to keep my wife in new designer clothes. Yep, things are tough .I bet a new president will solve everything.
Can I send him my payment coupons?
I am not a hypocrite. I have too much debt, just like many Americans. I did stupid, and now I am paying the consequences. But I do not cling to false hopes of being ‘saved’. Especially in a time when nobody needs to be saved. Gas prices suck but everyone is driving less and conserving gas any way they can. That has to be good. And the ‘housing crisis’ is a result of an overpriced real estate market in certain parts of the country that is now adjusting back to sane prices, which was flush with investors and speculators that had to know it wouldn’t last forever. No market keeps going up forever. Why does everyone think this is the Great Depression? Because the news told them so. Ignorance. It is not stupidity, it is simply a lack of knowledge. Look at the facts. We never even entered a recession. [please remember this was written BEFORE the numbers confirmed the recession!]. But everyone stopped spending as much as they usually do, because the news said the economy is slowing. So it did.
I guess we all make life what we want of it. Attitude is everything. With a bad attitude, I get nothing accomplished. I feel down and non-productive. With a good attitude, I can change the world.
Or at least appreciate what I have, and love living my life, everyday.

How it all started
Welcome to my Blog! I'm so glad you stopped by.
To introduce myself, I am a 30-something mom of 2, and I run a (very) small business with my husband of 14 years. For some background info, I'm originally from San Diego, CA, and hubby is from the WV/MD border. We consider ourselves regular, hard-working people, who want to preserve all the greatness of this country for our two teenage children.
As a disclaimer, I do try to read all I can get my hands on, and am currently reading The Making of America, to learn more about the Constitution. I am by no means "well-read" or highly educated in any way, I simply want to become better informed.
I'm actually quite suprised at myself for starting this blog, because I am not normally publically outspoken in any way. I have never been interested in politics in the past, nor participated in any protest or done anything more than cast my vote every 4 years. I have voted for Reagan, Clinton (twice), Bush (twice), and McCain. I vote on the issues, but I do feel I am better informed lately about more than just the issues, but instead for what is best for our nation as a whole. (I can see the forest, not just the trees).
To my point, the only reason I am politically outspoken at this point in my life is due to the 2008 Presidential campaign.
To be clear, I am not a right-wing or left-wing extremist, but I do feel many of my opinions lean to the conservative side. To the contrary, I am not religious, I do believe in a woman's right to her own body, and I do not feel threatened by gay marriage.
So how can I call myself 'conservative'? I feel the same way many Americans I know feel.... that we are so far from the ideals that America was founded on, and we are, in all sincerity, at a crossroads in our country. I believe in the strength and independence of the people of this great nation, and feel that the sense of entitlement many people have is robbing them of their ability to care for themselves (as well as robbing hard-working people of their money to support them!).
This is not sustainable, and our current president wants to expand upon this premise at an unprecedented level.
I'd like to stop going in circles here and transpose some writings I did during the campaign. It was the first time I'd ever written my feelings about politics, and I did it just to get the outrage out of me. I journaled my feelings, very personal feelings, and you will probably laugh at me in some parts. But it is all honest and raw.
One of them starts out with some normalcy then goes astray and I get just plain silly! I hope you'll find it as strange as I did (hey, it was late at night!).
Thank you for reading, I'll post again soon with those writings. Then I would love to hear your comments.
